Last week we went over format and categories for books. This week, let’s dive into genre, an area where many newer writers get confused. Nonfiction can be split into genres, but those delineations are much clearer. If you’re writing a book on beginner beekeeping, you probably aren’t wondering if it’s also self-help, though some genre-defying nonfiction does exist. But newer writers of fiction often do find themselves struggling to peg the genre of their story. Is this a science fiction or a mystery? It has some romance too, so it romance? Why should I even have to choose? Let’s demystify genre as much I can by going over some of the most common fiction genres. I can’t cover every genre and subgenre, so sorry if I miss covering your favorite one.
